Frontex antenna office in Estonia
Dear Magnus,
I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for your positive opinion regarding the
establishment of a Frontex antenna office in Estonia. This initiative represents a significant step
forward in reinforcing our cooperation and ensuring the security of the Schengen area.
The decentralisation of Frontex operations will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the
Agency's overall operational efficiency. In this context, it is of the utmost importance to bring
operational command structures as close to the external border as possible. Estonia has
consistently offered its full support and facilities to ensure the smooth setup of both the antenna
office and the quick reaction force, and we stand ready to provide any further assistance
required.
However, I must express the Estonian Government's concerns regarding the mixed signals we
have recently received from the Agency regarding the final location of the office. For the
Estonian Government, it is of vital importance that the antenna office and the quick reaction
force are located in Narva, rather than Tallinn. This aligns directly with our earlier agreement
with the Executive Director of Frontex.
Narva sits directly on the external border of the European Union, placing the office right in the
heart of ongoing operations. Establishing the antenna there would send a powerful political
signal that the European Union is visibly present exactly where it is needed most. I fondly recall
our productive joint visit to Narva last year, which highlighted the strategic importance of this
location.
Furthermore, I wish to stress that any concerns raised regarding the working environment
in Narva are entirely unfounded. Narva is a safe community with excellent infrastructure, a
strong and continuous presence of Estonian security agencies, and a long, proven tradition in
robust border management.
I kindly ask for your support in ensuring that the Agency adheres to its earlier commitments to
establish the antenna office and quick reaction force in Narva. Thank you for your continued
partnership and shared dedication to securing the external borders of the European Union
Yours Sincerely,
Igor Taro
