Dear colleagues, On behalf of the EUIPO Boards of Appeal, it is our pleasure to invite you to attend the 4th Meeting of Appeal Bodies, scheduled to take place on 17 September 2026 in a hybrid format. The purpose of the 4th Meeting between the EUIPO Boards of Appeal and the Appeal Bodies of Member State Intellectual Property Offices is to benchmark best practices in trade mark and design law and in procedural matters of appeal proceedings. As a valued stakeholder, your insights and contributions are greatly appreciated, and your continued participation plays an integral role in the success of our ongoing collaboration.
1. Draft Agenda and request for speakers/panellists
With regard to the agenda for this meeting, we would appreciate your feedback on the attached draft . We have included a couple of sessions for which we would be pleased to invite you to participate as a speaker or panellist. They are the following sessions: Recent national case law on absolute and relative grounds (11:20 – 12:30) We are looking for one speaker from a Court and one speaker from a national Board of Appeal or an Appeal Department to present recent national case law concerning absolute and relative grounds for refusal of trade marks, or design-related case law. Each presentation is expected to last approximately 15 minutes. Panel discussion (14:30-16:00) The agenda includes an interactive panel discussion, and we would welcome your views on which of the following topics would be of greatest interest:
Trade Mark Applications Made in Bad Faith Intersection between the trade marks and geographical protection, evocation of geographical indications Challenges of trade mark genuine use Family of marks Descriptiveness of names of colours
Should you wish to propose an alternative topic for the panel, we would be very pleased to receive your suggestions. For this session, we are seeking four panellists who will share relevant case law, practical experience, and perspectives on the selected topic. We would greatly welcome your contribution in enriching the discussion and ensuring a diverse range of judicial insights on one of the topics proposed above.

The meeting will be held in a hybrid format, at the EUIPO premises in Alicante and online via a Zoom tool.

The EUIPO will cover and organise onsite participation (travel arrangements - flights and accommodation) for one representative per Appeal Body. Should additional colleagues from your Appeal Body wish to participate, they are kindly invited to join us online. For those who will participate onsite, the EUIPO travel agent will contact you with this regard. Please do not book any travel arrangements by yourself. We kindly request all participants from your Appeal Body (onsite and online) to register by completing the registration form. In the form, please also indicate the topic you have selected for the interactive panel discussions, as well as the topics for which a participant from your Appeal Body would be willing to contribute as a panellist or speaker.
