Invitation to roundtable 15-16 May: How do we ensure secure connectivity
in the Nordic region? Redundancy – Resilience – Repair capabilities
BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THE CONFERENCE
Background In the current interconnected world, we need to ensure that our critical infrastructure is secure and resilient. The Nordic countries rely on subsea cables for communication within the region but also for European and global connectivity. Redundancy in the digital infrastructure is of essence should an incident occur, as are solid repair capabil- ities.
How do we ensure secure connectivity in the Nordic region including aspects of re- dundancy, resilience and repair capabilities?
Roundtable discussion points:
• The bottleneck – How do we increase cable laying, maintenance and repair
capabilities in the Nordic region? Is there a common interest in this field
within a NATO and EU context?
• The Nordic pitch – Cable projects of European interest are being developed
in order to strengthen global connectivity and secure redundancy and resili-
ence of the subsea cable system. Against this backdrop, what is the Nordic
point of departure and main pitch when securing funding and investment ?
• The secure supply chain – The EU has announced the creation of a cable
security toolbox for increased security in the supply chain. Tour de table with
an exchange of views and current state of play regarding Nordic suppliers.
• The regulatory aspect – views on a potential need for EU and/or international
regulation concerning submarine cable infrastructure? What remains uncov-
ered by existing legislation and is relevant to regulate? What should not be?
