In preparation of its centenary celebrations in 2026, UNIDROIT has embarked on a project to reorganise and publish its archives, which contain, among others, governance documents, a rich correspondence with its Member States and Host State (Italy), as well as a wealth of studies on its projects and legal unification instruments. This documentation is crucial to describe the Institute’s origins and progress in the pursuit of its mandate of unification of private law, which it has maintained constantly since its foundation as an organ of the League of Nations and then, subsequently, as an independent intergovernmental organisation, on which its current institutional activities are based.

In preparazione del centenario di UNIDROIT che cadrà nel 2026, l’Istituto ha iniziato un progetto di sistemazione e pubblicazione del proprio archivio che contiene, tra gli altri, documenti di governance, la ricca corrispondenza con gli Stati membri e quello di sede (l’Italia), e i numerosi studi relativi ai progetti e agli strumenti di unificazione del diritto. Questa documentazione è fondamentale per descrivere le origini ed il cammino dell’Istituto nel perseguire il suo mandato di unificazione del diritto privato, che ha messo in opera costantemente fin dalla sua creazione come organo della Società delle Nazioni e poi come organizzazione intergovernativa autonoma, e su cui si fondano le attività istituzionali di oggi.

To reflect on UNIDROIT’s history in its first century of life, in cooperation with the Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory in Frankfurt, UNIDROIT will publish a series of volumes dedicated to the various historical phases of its activity, its projects, and the very highly regarded jurists and politicians who have sustained the Institute over the years and contributed to its identity. As a first stepping stone of these studies, the event will also feature the launch of the first volume of the series, entitled “At the origins of the International Institute for the unification of private law, UNIDROIT”, which provides a first systematic and reasoned publication of the founding documents of the Institute in its very first years of life, including documents that have been found in the Historical and Diplomatic Archive of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in the Scialoja Collection held at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. UNIDROIT is grateful for the support received for this initiative from the archival and bibliographical superintendency for Lazio , the Ministry of Culture, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and for the financial support received from the Fondazione del Monte di Bologna e Ravenna as partial coverage of the archiving activity.

Per ragionare sul percorso di UNIDROIT nel suo secolo di vita, in collaborazione con il Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory di Francoforte, l’UNIDROIT pubblicherà alcuni volumi dedicati alle varie fasi storiche della sua attività, ai progetti ed ai personaggi di grande rilievo, giuristi e politici, che hanno contribuito alla creazione e al consolidamento della sua identità. Come momento di apertura di tali studi, nel corso dell’evento verrà anche presentato il primo volume della serie, intitolato “Alle origini dell’Istituto internazionale per la unificazione del diritto privato, UNIDROIT”, che pubblica per la prima volta, ed in modo sistematico e ragionato, i documenti di fondazione dell’Istituto e dei suoi primissimi anni di vita, includendo documenti reperiti presso l’Archivio Storico-diplomatico del Ministero degli Esteri e presso il Fondo Scialoja alla Università di Roma “La Sapienza”. UNIDROIT è grata del supporto ricevuto per questa iniziativa dalla Soprintendenza archivistica e bibliografica del Lazio, il Ministero della Cultura e dal Ministero degli Affari Esteri e l a Cooperazione Internazionale e per il supporto finanziario ricevuto dalla Fondazione del Monte di Bologna e Ravenna a parziale copertura delle spese delle attività di archiviazione.
