ITALY, 17-20 SEPTEMBER 2024
AND
TWENTIETH MEETING OF THE PERSISTENT ORGANIC POLLUTANTS REVIEW COMMITTEE (POPRC-20), ROME, ITALY, 23-27 SEPTEMBER 2024
Reference is made to the Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for
Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade and the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants.
The twentieth meeting of the Rotterdam Convention Chemical Review Committee (CRC-20) and
the twentieth meeting of the Stockholm Convention Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee (POPRC-20) will be held back-to-back from 17 to 20 September 2024 and from 23 to 27 September 2024, respectively, at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Viale delle Terme di Caracalla, 00153 Rome, Italy. The meeting of the CRC-20 will be opened at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, 17 September 2024. Pre-meetings for CRC-20 intersessional task groups will take place on Monday, 16 September 2024, and are open to all Committee members as well as to observers. Registered participants will receive information on the task groups and their pre-meetings in due course. The meeting of the POPRC-20 will be opened at 9.30 a.m. on Monday, 23 September 2024.
The provisional agendas for the meetings (UNEP/FAO/RC/CRC.20/1 and
UNEP/POPS/POPRC.20/1) are enclosed. Further meeting documents and other information on the arrangements for the meetings, including the tentative schedules of the meetings and the schedule of pre-meetings will be available on the respective websites: http://www.pic.int/crc20 and http://www.pops.int/poprc20
The meetings of the two committees are open to1:
(a) Parties to the respective conventions, which shall be treated as observers in accordance with the rules of procedure of the respective Conference of the Parties for the purpose of their participation in the Committee; and
(b) Observers, in accordance with the rules of procedure of the respective Conference of the Parties.

1 In accordance with paragraph 12 of the terms of reference of the Chemical Review Committee and rule 7 of rules of procedure of the Conference of the Parties to the Rotterdam Convention, for CRC; and paragraph 13 of the terms of reference of the POPs Review Committee and rule 7 of rules of procedure of the Conference of the Parties to the Stockholm Convention, for POPRC.
Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions Page | 2
Representatives of Stockholm Convention regional centres are reminded that for meetings of bodies of the Rotterdam Convention, e.g., participation in the Chemical Review Committee, it would be necessary to complete the observer admission procedure for the Rotterdam Convention.
Representatives of Parties to the conventions, the United Nations, its specialized agencies, and the International Atomic Energy Agency, States not Party to the conventions, the entity operating the mechanism referred to in paragraph 6 of Article 13 of the Stockholm Convention, as well as bodies or agencies that have already been admitted as observers to the meetings of the Conference of the Parties to the respective Convention are invited to complete the attached registration form for observers and submit it to Ms. Stéphanie Cadet ([email protected]; [email protected]) before Friday, 16 August 2024.
Bodies or agencies that have not previously been admitted as observers at meetings of the conferences of the Parties to the respective Convention need to complete the procedure for admission as an observer no later than Friday, 23 August 2024, before registering for the meetings. In addition, taking into account the legal autonomy of each of the Conventions, observers need to have been admitted to each meeting (either by previous participation as an observer or by completing the admission procedure). Admission to the meetings of one Convention’s bodies does not automatically entitle the observer concerned to participate in the meeting of the other Convention’s body. Further information on the criteria and procedure relevant to admission of observers is available on the conventions’ websites: https://chm.pops.int/Procedures/AdmissionofObservers/tabid/3676/Default.aspx and https://www.pic.int/Procedures/AdmissionofObservers/tabid/4299/language/en-US/Default.aspx
Registrations and applications for admission as observers, as applicable, are highly encouraged to be submitted as per the above-mentioned deadlines. The Secretariat might not be in a position to accommodate late requests for participation in the meetings, due to the need to ensure appropriate arrangements are in place for the meetings. Please furthermore note that as there will be other meetings in Rome around this time, logistical and other arrangements may become more difficult closer to the meeting date.
The Secretariat would respectfully recall that financial assistance will not be provided for participation as observers in the meetings. Furthermore, observers will be responsible for making their own arrangements to participate in the meetings, including visa and hotel arrangements. The United Nations does not cover life or medical insurance for participants. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the participant or that of your Government or organization to ensure adequate insurance coverage prior to travelling to Italy.
Finally, the Secretariat would like to recognize and sincerely appreciate the importance of a balanced participation of observers in the abovementioned meetings, so as to enrich the work and outcomes of the meetings of the conferences of the Parties to the Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions.
