Workshop on Artificial Intelligence awareness for threat detection and epidemic intelligence
2-3 October 2024
Background
The Regulation (EU) 2022/2370 amending the ECDC founding regulation establishes that ECDC should perform threat detection and surveillance, including development of digital platforms and applications and the use of digital technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) for data collection and analysis.
Moreover, article 14 of the Regulation (EU) 2022/2371 on serious cross-border threats to health defines the need of ensuring the “continued development of the digital platform for surveillance”, including the application of “artificial intelligence for data validation, analysis and automated reporting, including statistical reporting”.
In 2023, ECDC organised a workshop to finalise the Delphi consultation on the AI core principles of relevance for threat detection and epidemic intelligence. During this meeting, the need of capacity building, including awareness workshop on this topic was deemed necessary. Furthermore, in the 2024 Epidemic Intelligence network meeting, a co-creation exercise was performed with the participants to tailor an AI awareness workshop according to the needs of the participants.
ECDC is organising a workshop on AI awareness for threat detection and epidemic intelligence that will be held at the ECDC premises in Stockholm, 24-25 April 2024. The workshop will be held in-person, and online participation will be possible for the speakers presenting the AI use cases.
Scope and purpose
The main objective of this workshop is to increase awareness and understanding of the opportunities AI brings to threat detection and epidemic intelligence.
The specific objectives are:
• Increasing understanding of various AI techniques, including but not limited to generative AI, and how they relate to one another.
• Identifying common challenges in epidemic intelligence and mapping potential AI solutions to address them.
• Getting hands-on experience on the process of implementing AI for threat detection and epidemic intelligence, including key considerations around responsible AI and the European Union AI Act.
• Getting hands-on experience in using generative AI tools and prompt engineering. • Sharing some experiences across Member States on the use of AI within the organization.
Participants
The participants of this workshop will be Operational Contact Points for Epidemic Intelligence, and other key stakeholders, with no- or limited experience on implementing AI for threat detection and epidemic intelligence.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) is organising a workshop on Artificial intelligence (AI) awareness for threat detection and epidemic intelligence at the ECDC premises, Stockholm, Sweden on 2 and 3 October 2024. Kindly find attached the draft agenda.
The main objective of this workshop is to increase awareness and understanding of the opportunities AI brings to threat detection and epidemic intelligence. The workshop will be held in-person, and online participation will be possible for the speakers presenting the AI use cases. This workshop is targeted towards Operational Contact Points for Epidemic Intelligence or National Focal Points for Threat detection, EWRS and IHR (including team members working on threat detection activities), and other key stakeholders, with no- or limited experience in implementing AI for threat detection and epidemic intelligence.
We have allocated one seat per country and kindly ask you to inform us to whom we should send the official invitation in the coming weeks.
We kindly ask you to save the date and forward this email to the nominated person to attend the workshop if she/he/they are not included in the recipients of this email.
According to the Rules of Reimbursement (Rules for reimbursement of expenses incurred by invitees invited by ECDC), ECDC will organize and cover the costs of your flights (including travel insurance) and accommodation according to the meeting agenda and provide you with meals. You will also be entitled to claim the daily subsistence allowance and public transportation to/from the airport after attending the meeting by completing and submitting a Reimbursement application form. No reimbursements are foreseen for participants based in Stockholm.
