NOTA BIOGRÁFICA JOÃO EDUARDO CURA MARIANO ESTEVES POSSE NO STJ EM 12/11/2020

Nasceu em 1957, em Coimbra, é licenciado pela Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de

Coimbra e Mestre em Ciências Jurídico-Civilísticas pela Faculdade de Direito da Universidade Católica

Portuguesa.

Foi advogado (1980-1983).

Após ter frequentado o II Curso Normal do CEJ, iniciou funções como magistrado judicial

em 1986, tendo sido Juiz nos Tribunais Judiciais de Coimbra (1986-1987), de Instrução Criminal da

Guarda (1987-1989), da Marinha Grande (1989-1990), dos Juízos Cíveis de Lisboa (1990-1993) e do

Círculo Judicial de Cascais (1993-2005).

Foi Juiz Desembargador nos Tribunais da Relação de Coimbra (2005-2006) e do Porto

(2006-2007 e 2016-2017).

Foi docente da disciplina de Direito Civil no CEJ (1997-2001).

Exerceu as funções de Representante Português na União Internacional de Magistrados, e

na Associação Europeia de Magistrados (1997-2003).

Foi Juiz do Tribunal Constitucional eleito pela Assembleia da República (2007-2016).

Foi membro do Conselho Consultivo da Procuradoria Geral da República (2017-2020).

É Professor Convidado da Faculdade de Direito da Universidade Nova de Lisboa desde

2017.

É Juiz Conselheiro do Supremo Tribunal de Justiça desde 2020.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTICE

JOÃO EDUARDO CURA MARIANO ESTEVES

Appointed justice to the Supreme Court of Justice on November 12th, 2020

Born in 1957, in Coimbra, he was graduated by the Faculty of Law of the University of

Coimbra and a Master's degree in Legal and Civil Sciences from the Faculty of Law of the Portuguese

Catholic University.

He was a lawyer (1980-1983).

After concluding the 2nd ordinary course of Centro de Estudos Judiciários (CEJ - school of

magistrates of Portugal), he began working as a judicial magistrate in 1986, having been a Judge at the

Judicial Courts of Coimbra (1986-1987), of Criminal Instruction of Guarda (1987-1989), Marinha

Grande (1989-1990), Lisbon Civil Courts (1990-1993) and Cascais Judicial Circle (1993-2005).

He was a Judge at the Courts of Appeal of Coimbra (2005-2006) and Oporto (2006-2007

and 2016-2017).

He taught Civil Law at CEJ (1997-2001).

He served as Portuguese Representative at the International Union of Magistrates, and at

the European Association of Magistrates (1997-2003).

He was a Judge of the Constitutional Court elected by the Parliament (2007-2016).

He was a member of the Advisory Council of the Attorney General's Office (2017-2020).

He has been an Invited Professor at the Faculty of Law of Universidade Nova de Lisboa

from 2017 to June 2024.

He has been Justice at the Supreme Court of Justice since 2020.

He took office as President of the Supreme Court of Justice on June 4th, 2024.
