The SWNC-course starts on Tuesday 8th of October at 0815 hrs at the Finnish Naval
Academy (FNA), Suomenlinna.
Here is the schedule for the first week:
The next two weeks we are at sea (from Monday 0800 hrs to Friday 1400 hrs) on the
Wrede-class training vessel. The weekends are off duty.

Arriving in Helsinki and the Naval Academy, Suomenlinna
How to get there:
Suomenlinna is accessible only by water. A ferry service (HSL) runs from the Market
Square to Suomenlinna throughout the year. HSL is a joint local authority managing public
transport and the transport system in the Helsinki region.
Arriving by ferry:
If you take the morning ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki West Terminal. Take tram number 7
and buy an AB-zone ticket. The ticket is valid for 80 minutes. Travel to Helsinki Kauppatori
and take the ferry to Suomenlinna. Timetables in HSL ferry - Suomenlinna Official Website
I will meet you at the Suomenlinna on monday, so give me a call when you know your
timetable and ETA.
Arriving by plane:
Kauppatori ferry station where you take the ferry to Suomenlinna. Remember to buy the
ferry ticket from the ticket machine (you have to choose the ABC zone).
How to get to Helsinki Airport: You can arrive at Helsinki Airport easily by using public
transportation train or bus or taxi. Transfer to the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport takes about 1 - 2
hours.

Airport buses
Buses take you close to the terminals smoothly. There are various bus connections to the
airport from Helsinki city centre. Airport buses, including Finnair City Bus have frequent
daily connections to the airport. Read more about buses.
Airport train
Trains P and I operate daily from Helsinki city centre to the airport. Read more about
trains.
Taxi
Various taxi agencies operate between the airport and Helsinki city centre, and other
nearby towns. Please find out beforehand from which terminal your flight departs, and the
taxi will drop you off right in front of the right terminal. Read more about taxis.

Navy
Public transportation has all information in English including stops.
You need to bring the following:
- Shipboard working uniform or equivalent
- warm clothes for working on deck
- rainwear
- personal hygiene products + towel
- sportswear
- service uniform
The FNA will provide the handouts, notebooks, pens etc.
Accommodation:
Sun Oct 15 - Nov 4: Suomenlinna, double dorm room. Co-ed shower, toilets, lounge and
kitchen with cooking facilities.
Meals:
During week 1: Lunch and dinner at FNA canteen (FNA offer meals). There is a grocery
store in Suomenlinna, 300 m from FNA.
Course contents:
First week: theory and simulator. For training in the simulator we divide in two 3-man
teams (conning officer, radar operator and wheelman). We sail combat vessels (LOA 50
m) in the archipelago at 20 kn. Objectives: to study operational environment, voyage
planning and MRM.
Second and third week: aboard the Fabian Wrede-class training vessels. In addition to six
students the crew has two cooks, CO, OOW, Chief and Engineering Officer. You will work
as conning officer and on deck, stand port watch, carry out cleaning chores etc. We sail
from Mon 1000 hrs till Friday 1400 hrs (6 - 12 hrs per day. You can stay in the dorm rooms
for the weekend.
The course will end on Nov 4, by 1200 hrs. Transfer to the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport takes
about 1 - 2 hours.
Leisure time:
First week: classes from 0800 hrs till 1600 hrs. There will be voyage planning in the
evenings, but also time for e.g. sports (FNA has a gym, the island fortress is a beautiful
place to go jogging). There is less time for leisure activities once we are aboard because
of, again, voyage planning and watch duties. The weekends are free.

INVITATION TO THE SHALLOW WATERS NAVIGATION COURSE AT THE FINNISH NAVAL ACADEMY
The Chief of Staff Navy Command Finland has the honor of inviting your participants to the Shallow Waters Navigation Course. The course will be conducted on 7th – 25th October 2024 at the Finnish Naval Academy. The aim of the course is to provide training in independent navigation in the archipelago and shallow waters environment. The course is designed for officers with navigation experience at least 3 years.
1 Registration
Participation is by invitation only and the course has a limited number of seats. The maximum number of students is ten.
We propose to share the seats as follows: US one seat, DEU one seat, EST one seat, LIT one seat, FRA one seat and LAT one seat.

Remaining seats will be distributed after that date. Please inform us your confirmation e-mail if you are interested in additional seats.
The Finnish Naval Academy will start the Request for Visit (RFV) process for the participants after confirmation. Participants are requested to send an e-mail that contains the participants’ name, rank and date of birth to the Finnish Naval Academy NLT Friday 13 September 2024.
The RFV must include a request for visiting the following military areas: Pansio (incl. harbour), Upinniemi (incl. harbour) and Suomenlinna.
2 Accommodation and Provisions
The Finnish Naval Academy provides accommodation and provisions for the participants during the course. There is also a possibility to store and warm up meals at the accommodation during the course.
