The European Commission organizes the Coordinated Activities on the Safety of Products (CASP) project every year. This initiative aims at and facilitating cooperation among market surveillance authorities in the EU and EFTA. The aim of coordinated activities in the area of product safety across the European Union/EFTA is to ensure a safe single market by providing MSAs with the necessary tools to jointly test products placed on the Single Market, determine their risks, and draw common positions and procedures. Joint testing of products (fully financed by the European Commission) also enables pooling resources and facilitates coordinated controls based on agreed principles throughout the Single Market.
One of the testing activities in CASP 2025 will focus on specific chemicals based on:
- the regulation concerning Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH), and
- the directive restricting the use of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (RoHS), (see Section 2.2.1.2.B.)
The aim of this activity is to test a certain number of consumer goods (with special attention to childcare articles) for the presence of specific chemicals within the limits of the above-mentioned two legislations. The decision regarding which and how many consumer goods will be tested for the presence of specific chemicals will be taken by the participating authorities at the beginning of the project. The testing requirements used in chemical testing are common to a large number of different consumer goods.
The estimated starting time of the project is Q1 of 2025.
