Honourable Dr. Iur Villu Hard Kove,
The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Estonia,
I am writing to extend two invitations. First, I invite you to provide initial 5 minutes online reaction to the public lecture titled "North and South: Judicial Cooperation Between the United Kingdom and the Global South." by Honourable Lord Robert Reed, President
UK Supreme Court on 20 January 2025 at 2pm UK Time. Please see details of the public lecture below at the end of this email.
Your five-minute response will involve sharing your comments and/or questions on judicial cooperation between the Global South and Estonia following the public lecture on 20 January. You could discuss
how the Supreme Court of Estonia aligns with the UK judiciary's interest in fostering judicial cooperation with the Global South, highlight the current state of judicial cooperation between Estonia and jurisdictions in the Global South, and suggest ways to
enhance this cooperation in the near future. If you accept the invitation, I would be happy to assist you in preparing your comments.
Judges from the Supreme Court of other countries (Palestine, Ukraine, Maldives, Mauritius, Romania) are also providing initial online reactions to Lord Reed's lecture.
If you are busy or unavailable, I kindly request that you forward this invitation to another judge of the Court who you believe might be interested.
Second, I invite you to deliver an online standalone guest lecture on a topic of your choice, related to your experience as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Estonia. This lecture would be part of the Judges
Guest Lecture Series hosted by the Global South Network (GSN) at Leicester Law School, University of Leicester, UK.
I believe your lecture would be an excellent addition to the GSN Judges Guest Lecture Series. Previous speakers have included judges from the Supreme and Constitutional Courts of
Pakistan, Nigeria, Gambia, Afghanistan, Mauritius,
Maldives,
Mexico,
South Africa,
Palestine,
Israel, and
Ukraine. Additionally, a hybrid guest lecture by Lord Reed of Allermuir,
President of the UK Supreme Court, is scheduled for 20 January 2025.
If you accept the invitation, please confirm a convenient date for your lecture and provide the topic you wish to present. The lecture can be scheduled between 10:00 and 18:00 UK time on any working day from January/ February 2025 onwards. This will also allow
me sufficient time to properly publicise the lecture to universities and constitutional courts across the Global South and Europe.
If you accept the invitation, the audience for your lecture will include staff and students from the University of Leicester, as well as members of the GSN, primarily consisting of university staff, students, lawyers, and judges.
Please let me know if you would prefer to deliver the lecture in a language other than English. I could make arrangements for translation/interpretation.
Depending on your availability, the academic calendar in the UK, and the funding process, I may extend an invitation for an in-person guest lecture in the UK at a later date.
If you are busy and unavailable, I kindly request that you to forward this invitation to any other judge of the Court who you believe might be interested.
THE GLOBAL SOUTH NETWORK (GSN)-AN INTRODUCTION
GSN started its journey on 17 March 2023. It consists of academics (including staff and students from different schools and colleges of universities across the globe) and actors outside academia. It is aimed at empowering people from, or focusing on, the Global
South.
As of today, it is the only international interdisciplinary network that organised around 70 knowledge exchange activities (including 4 international hybrid conferences, three phases (
Phase
I,
Phase II, and
Phase III) of PhD in Progress weekly international interdisciplinary panel-discussion seminars,
12 guest lectures of supreme court judges from different countries), created a team of conveners, established an
interdisciplinary advisory committee, activated the
website and
YouTube
channel, created editorial board of GSN blogs, organised thematic and geographic groups within GSN, launched GSN mentoring, completed two edited collections on judicial independence, and created opportunities of public engagement for academics from
all backgrounds just over a year of the network's launch. The social, political, economic, and legal issues of the Global South received due attention.
GSN is the world's only interdisciplinary international network that is created by and for the Global South, yet serving both the Global South and Global North. It has made an unparalleled contribution to equality, diversity, and inclusion by hosting guest
talks with judges from the
Supreme Court of Ukraine during the Russia-Ukraine War, as well as from both the
Supreme Constitutional Court of Palestine and
Supreme
Court of Israel during the peak of the Middle East crisis. 70% of participants during the GSN activities since its launch in March 2023 were females.
If you have any questions or need any further information information please let me know. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Nauman
