Scope and purpose
Second meeting of the European Environment and Health Process
Partnership on Human Biomonitoring, 11 February 2025, Belgrade, Serbia
A new mechanism for cooperation among Member States, the Environment and Health Process (EHP) Partnership, was established at the Seventh Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health, held in Budapest, Hungary, 5–7 July 2023. The EHP Partnership on human biomonitoring (HBM) was established to promote use of HBM as a reliable instrument to assess exposure to chemicals and to support decisions on management of hazardous chemicals. The EHP Partnership on HBM, led by Germany and co-led by Georgia, is a platform to facilitate exchange of knowledge, experiences and tools as well as a capacity-building hub to increase expertise in HBM in participating countries and to accelerate uptake of HBM in the WHO European Region. So far, 19 countries have joined the Partnership. The priorities of the Partnership in the short- and long-term were identified at the first meeting of the EHP Partnership on HBM (28 November 2023, Tbilisi, Georgia) and subsequent online consultations. The second meeting of the EHP Partnership on HBM, hosted by Serbia, will bring together members of the Partnership, including those that joined recently, and invited experts. The main objectives of the meeting are to:
• provide updates on development of the Partnership and HBM activities, • discuss potential links between the EHP Partnership on HBM and the European Union
Partnership for the Assessment of Risks from Chemicals and • share countries’ experience in initiating national HBM studies.
The meeting will also discuss progress made since the inception of the Partnership and future activities . The meeting will be followed by a 2-day training course on HBM, addressed mainly to experts in Serbia but also open to interested participants of the meeting of the Partnership. The curriculum will be based on the WHO educational course on HBM and will cover the basics of HBM as well as emerging issues such as the principles and objectives of HBM, biomarkers, planning and conducting HBM surveys, laboratory analysis and data management, and examples of HBM of chemicals of public health concern. Organized under the umbrella of the EHP Partnership on HBM, the course is expected to strengthen HBM capacity in Serbia and to allow sharing of knowledge and expertise between international and national experts.
