Dear colleagues,
It is with deep sadness that I am informing you of the death of our
former deputy Director General John Ryan this weekend.
John had a long and very impressive career in DG SANTE and was central to
making EU public health policy what it is today.
He left a lasting legacy with his work on HIV/AIDS, cancer, mental
health, public health emergencies, tobacco policy, and so many other
issues on which we have all appreciated his keen insight. His
contribution in getting us through the COVID-19 crisis and building the
EU Health Union was invaluable. As Members of the HSC you have worked
with him in full partnership with reciprocal respect and support.
John was also a true leader, who I know so many of you looked to for
guidance and inspiration. We will all miss him terribly.
May he rest in peace.
