The Medical Council of Ireland is the regulator of doctors in Ireland. It maintains the Register of Medical Practitioners - the register of all doctors who are legally permitted to undertake medical work in Ireland. The Medical Council of Ireland also sets the standards for medical education and training in Ireland. It oversees lifelong learning and skills development throughout doctors’ professional careers through its professional competence requirements. It is charged with promoting good medical practice. The Medical Council of Ireland is also where the public may make a complaint against a doctor.
The International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities (IAMRA) is a membership organisation whose purpose is to promote effective medical regulation worldwide by supporting best practice, innovation, collaboration, and knowledge sharing to ensure public safety and enable the global medical workforce to deliver quality health care.
IAMRA’s vision is that everyone around the world is treated and cared for by safe and competent doctors. At its core, IAMRA is about encouraging and facilitating international cooperation and understanding of medical and health professional regulation. We aim to provide opportunities for our members and partners to share information and discuss common problems.
IAMRA does not promote or endorse any particular model of medical regulation. We recognize there are many different structures and approaches, and we want to support and encourage effective regulatory systems that provide the foundation for patient safety and public protection. Given the increasing mobility of the medical workforce, the impacts of regulation are felt across the world. What happens in one jurisdiction has the potential to affect another. The challenge for medical regulators is to create relevant and effective systems that can respond to:
• The rapidly changing environments in which physicians work; • The changes in both healthcare and communication technologies; • Evolving healthcare delivery systems.

1994: The journey began in Washington, D.C., where the Federation of State Medical Boards of the United States (FSMB) hosted the 1st International Conference on Medical Regulation. Representatives from Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States gathered to discuss shared regulatory challenges and the potential for ongoing international dialogue.
1996 ONWARDS: Energized by the success of the initial meeting, biennial conferences became a tradition, hosted worldwide in locations such as Australia, South Africa, the UK, and Dubai. Each conference reinforced the commitment to global dialogue and collaboration.
2000: IAMRA was formally established, bringing together regulatory authorities from Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, Sweden, the UK, and the US. By 2004, IAMRA was incorporated in Texas with FSMB’s continued support.
TODAY: Now with over 140 members globally, IAMRA champions effective medical regulation by promoting best practices, innovation, and knowledge sharing. In a rapidly evolving world, IAMRA’s mission is clear: to support regulatory systems that prioritize patient safety, adapt to new healthcare technologies, and meet the needs of a dynamic medical workforce.
