Subject: Response to the information request regarding land vehicle fires (03.06.2025, reg-nr 1.2-5.1/148-1)
Dear Philipp,
We are sending you the statistics on land vehicle fires that occurred outside buildings during the period 2020–2024.
Please note that based on the data from 2020 and 2021, it is not possible to distinguish between cars and other land vehicles. Therefore, the figures for those years reflect fires involving all types of land vehicles (e.g. cars, trucks, buses, agricultural machinery, etc.).
Starting from 2022, it has become possible to differentiate passenger cars from other vehicle types, and the statistics shown in Table 1 reflect this distinction.
Table 1 | |
Year | Number of land vehicle fires |
2020 | 301 |
2021 | 328 |
2022, of which: | 293 |
cars | 178 |
other land vehicles | 115 |
2023, of which: | 315 |
cars | 220 |
other land vehicles | 95 |
2024, of which: | 289 |
cars | 209 |
other land vehicles | 80 |
Table 2 presents the statistics on fires involving electric cars and other types of passenger cars for the period 2022–2024.
Table 2 | |||
Fires in cars by type | 2022 | 2023 | 2024 |
Electic cars | 2 | 2 | 2 |
Other cars (ICEs, hybrid) | 176 | 218 | 207 |
We would like to clarify that, according to the data, none of the fires involving electric vehicles occurred immediately following a traffic accident. Furthermore, we have no information indicating that the electric vehicles involved had previously been in a traffic accident or had been otherwise damaged.
It is possible that, in the context of your research question, it may be useful to compare the Rescue Board’s statistics on land vehicle fires with the statistics of the Estonian Transport Administration on registered vehicles in Estonia, which also includes the distribution of vehicles by engine type: https://www.transpordiamet.ee/soidukite-statistika

Dear Maris Uuetoa,
I am currently conducting an investigation on the topic of fires in electrified vehicles after crashes. Do you have any statistics that provide an overview of accidents with electrified vehicles?
Anything in this direction would be helpful for me.
Additionally, if you have statistics on vehicle fires involving ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicles, please share them with me.
I am looking forward to hearing from you!
Sincerely,
Philipp van Opbergen
