Dear Ms Heidy Purga,
As of July 2025, Denmark holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The
Danish Presidency will take this opportunity to highlight the role of culture, media and sport
in upholding European values and democratic resilience.
Europe is facing a changing international order with greater uncertainty, intensified global
strategic and economic competition and an increased level of conflict. Europe’s strength
during difficult times lies in the values on which we built our societies: democracy, freedom
of speech, education and knowledge.
On 3-4 November 2025, I will be hosting an informal media ministers' meeting in
Copenhagen. I would like to use this occasion to initiate a debate on media as part of a
European Democracy Shield and to discuss challenges and solutions facing the media
sector. In Copenhagen, I will seek to unite my European colleagues in support of a
declaration highlighting the necessity of culture and media as a safeguard for our European
democracies.
I would be honored to host you at the informal ministerial meeting and look forward to
welcoming you in Copenhagen.
