Dear Minister,

Thank you for your letter of 10 November presenting the Estonian situation as regards to the implementation of the renewed Schengen Information System (SIS) project. I appreciate your honesty and clarity towards us, and I thank you for your collaboration.

As you are aware, the entry into operation of the renewed SIS constitutes the first stepping- stone of the project for interoperability of information systems in the area of justice and home affairs, a crucial project to make the EU safer for its citizens. Member States have a special responsibility in the management of the project, and all efforts at national level should be focused to avoid further delays.

Estonia has made notable progress on the implementation of the renewed SIS over the past year, and it is now in the last phase of implementation. However, some preparations still need to be done. I call upon you to step up your efforts in the coming month and dedicate all necessary resources to achieve technical readiness in time.

A delay in one Member State will cause a delay for the entire Union, something that we must try hard to avoid. My services, alongside eu-LISA, stand ready to support in the upcoming weeks to ensure that all the preparations for the entry into operation of the renewed SIS are in place on time.
